For those backers who would prefer to repair magnets themselves, we recommend Gorilla Glue Clear. However, any normal super glue or epoxy will work as well, just be sure to apply enough to cover the base of the magnet before inserting into the hole.

How is the HEX magnet quality check coming along?
As noted in our last update, we have been manually checking all 84,000 magnets. We have made significant progress and have now begun shifting our resources to shipping out orders. Going forward, we will continue splitting our time between the quality checks and shipping out backer orders.
When will USA orders ship?
We have about half of the United States orders ready to go and they started shipping this week. We anticipate it will take us about two weeks to get them all sent out. Backers will receive a separate email with tracking information from our website, www.thacko.com, so please make sure it doesn't end up in your spam folder.

When will international orders ship?
Once the United States orders ship, we'll immediately shift to getting the international orders out the door.
Results from our glue study.
Based on our research and suggestions from helpful backers, we tested multiple glues to determine the ones that perform best at holding the high strength N42 neodymium magnets within each HEX. Here are the glues we tested (Amazon links included):
Every one of the glues performed well, but in our punishing magnet tests, there was one that stood out and is the one we recommend: Gorilla Glue Clear. Most importantly, it's very strong. It's also easy to apply and has minimal odor when wet. The one caveat is, due to its low viscosity, it should be applied with the HEX upside down to allow excess glue to flow through the small port we designed at the back at the magnet hole.
Gorilla Glue Clear was the "clear" winner of our glue test.

The inevitable bad news update.

TL;DR
Good news: Our shipment of HEX has arrived!
Bad news: Some of the magnets are being pulled out of the HEXs.
Solution: We are performing a quality check of every HEX (yes, all 14,000 of them) and replacing the faulty HEXs with good ones.
What's next: We expect to complete the quality check and begin shipping within three weeks.
So what happened?
We have a lot to unpack so let's walk you through it. The long-awaited shipment arrived at our door last week, and opening the first box of HEX was an exciting moment for us. While we were initially wowed with the professional quality of the injection molded plastic, we quickly noticed one magnet was missing from its side hole. Then we noticed another, and another, and another. Our initial excitement quickly turned to dread as we realized the enormity of the problem we had before us. That was a pretty sad day, to say the least.
The Problem
Since then, we've spent many hours trying to determine the root cause of this glaring issue. In the end, our findings showed the problem to be multi-factor:
Magnets. We ended up settling on high grade magnets (N42) because we were impressed with their strength, however, it's apparent they can be pulled free if an insufficient amount of glue was applied.
Glue. The amount of glue applied to each magnet at the factory was inconsistent. Some magnets simply didn't receive enough to hold it in place.
Quality check. While we made sure the manufacturer focused on polarity accuracy and minimizing glue "squidging" on the HEX surface, we didn't think we needed to specify they also perform a general quality check on the magnets. This has already been communicated to the factory and won't happen again in the future.
The Solution
If there is a bright side to this situation, it's that this is a fixable problem. We have formulated a plan that will ensure each of our backers receives the quality HEXs they trusted us to deliver. Fortunately, we ordered more product than what was needed to fill our Kickstarter orders (these were intended to fill post-Kickstarter sales). This excess product will be where we get the good HEXs to replace the faulty ones in the Kickstarter orders.
The Plan
Simply put, we've decided to test every single HEX for loose magnets. The daunting task of manually checking over 84,000 magnets is not something we were expecting to do, but the process is already underway.
What this looks like is opening every pack one at a time (5-packs through 63+ packs), testing every side of every HEX with a stack of N42 magnets (at least twice), and setting aside any faulty HEXs into the "bad" pile. Each "bad" HEX is then replaced with an identical "good" HEX from our quality checked "good" pile and carefully repackaged, ready for shipping.
How long will this take?
Based on our nerdy statistical tracking, the quality check process is currently 41% complete and should be finished within three weeks.
What about the "bad" HEXs?
Once all Kickstarter orders have been shipped, we will move into repair mode. We are already testing various glues to determine the one that provides the best results. We'll then re-apply the magnets and fully test each of them to ensure the magnets stay in place. These properly repaired HEXs will be our first stock for post-Kickstarter sale.
When will shipping begin?
As noted earlier, we expect to begin shipping Kickstarter orders within three weeks. The HEXs will be shipped out according to backer number, starting with United States and followed by international. We just finished integrating our Shopify store so we can accurately and efficiently assemble and ship the orders. Please note you will receive a separate email with tracking information from our website, THACKO.com, so please make sure it doesn't end up in your spam folder. IMPORTANT: any last-minute address changes should be sent to [email protected].
